No Socks, No Problem
June 6, 2023
One of the most overdone trends I’ve never been a fan of is wearing crazy patterned/coloured socks with a suit. When guys were required to wear suits for work (shoutout to the guys who still are), they more than likely had to dress pretty conservatively. Their suits were some shade of solid navy/gray/black and their shirts were white or blue. Personally, I think the crazy sock trend started because guys wanted to show some (hidden) personality to their ordinary solid suit and shirt uniform.
Although I do believe in showing your personality through how you dress, the socks were (and still are to some degree) overdone. I never jumped on the crazy sock trend but I also felt that solid socks were boring. I had seen guys pull off the “no-sock-look” and incorporated that into my style.
When it comes to rocking the “no-sock look”, my secret is that I’m actually wearing socks (you just can’t see them).
Here are my tips to pull off the no-sock look:
1. PANT LENGTH
Your pant length can’t be too long or short. I suggest right above the ankle where it almost touches the shoe.
2. PANT OPENING
The opening at the bottom of your pants needs to be tapered. How tapered you go depends on your foot size and calf circumference but my rule of thumb is the opening should be a little wider than the shape of your shoe opening.
3. SOCK SHAPE VS. SHOE SHAPE
I have different no-show socks for my different style of shoes. The whole point of no-shows are they shouldn’t be seen so even if socks are advertised as “no-show”, you still need to make sure they correlate the shape of your shoe.
For casual sneakers/tennis-shoes or lace-up/monk strap shoes, I recommend these below:
For loafers and other low-cut shoes, I suggest these below:
4. SOCK COLOR
Even though they’re not supposed to be seen, I still suggest wearing socks that are the same color as your shoe or as close to your skin color as possible.
